Diesel for Generators: Planning Your Backup Power Fuel
5 August 2026 · 4 min read
Calculate your real burn rate
Generator fuel consumption depends on load, not just on generator size. A 100 kVA set at full load can burn roughly 20 litres per hour; at partial load far less. Measure or ask your technician for actual figures at the load you typically run, then size your storage for the longest outage you are willing to ride out.
Keep diesel fresh
Diesel stored for long periods can degrade and grow contamination. Rotate your generator stock with your operational fuel where possible, keep tanks sealed and full to limit condensation, and have fuel tested if it has sat for more than six months.
Set an automatic reorder level
Decide on a level — for example 60% of tank capacity — at which you order, not when the low-level alarm screams. Daiker Fuels can schedule automatic top-ups for hospital and commercial generator tanks so backup power is never left half-empty.
